New York City Public Advocate Tish James Statement on on Illegal Hotel Fire in Hell’s Kitchen –  02.06.15

Today, the City of New York filed a lawsuit in New York State Supreme Court alleging that four Manhattan apartment buildings were illegal used as hotels catering to tourists. Two of the buildings were cited in the New York City Public Advocate’s Top 30 Illegal Hotels list[1]. Additionally, yesterday a five-story building in Manhattan owned by the company at the top of the list was damaged in a large fire. New York City Public Advocate Letitia James released the following statement:

“I applaud the City for taking swift action against two illegal hotels I named in my Top Illegal Hotels in NYC list. Today, the City took these two buildings to state court to seek punitive damages and compensation. These illegal hotels exacerbate New York’s housing crisis, and this is a critical step in putting an end to their existence. Following yesterday’s troubling fire at another building previously cited in my list, I call for increased inspections and summonses for buildings that repeatedly violate our housing code through the operation of illegal hotels,” said New York City Public Advocate Letitia James.
