Airbnb’s burden: Come clean, now, and share data with the government to expose lawbreakers

Airbnb’s rap is getting stale.

Study after study shows that the vast majority of Airbnb listings are illegal hotels — full apartments or individual rooms rented for 30 nights or less without the owner present — but the company dismisses the data out of hand.

First, Airbnb protested that data from the New York attorney general exposing many of the properties it lists as illegal hotels was “incomplete and outdated.” Presented with a second thorough analysis of its listings, Airbnb claimed that it was “flawed.”
